Heeling Control
This image shows how the lever arm of righting moment due to hiking increases as the heel angle increases. As heel increases, the skipper moves from the gunwale to the windward edge of the planing hydrofoil. Note that the anti-heeling lever arm quadruples as the heeling angle increases from 0º to 30º. That is equivalent to the skipper quadrupling his/her weight.
In the illustration the horizontal arrow is the hiking lever arm, the arrow aimed down is the weight of the skipper and the arrow aimed up is the lift of the hydrofoil. Note that leeward hull penetrates the water thus controlling the leeway angle and avoiding the need for a daggerboard.
